5th July 2006: A message from Scottish Lacrosse Men's Team

Dear Scots in London (SIL) (the largest Scottish network organisation in London - approaching 4,000+ dynamic, passionate Scots and growing fast),

Firstly, please bear with us, while SIL continues its diverse mailshots ahead of the launch of the new SIL website.

This is just a note to advise that the Scottish Lacrosse Men's Team are looking for sponsorship for their forthcoming World Cup appearance in Canada. If you can help or are interested in finding out more about Lacrosse, then please read on.

The below note was received from Giles Davidson of the Scottish Men's Lacrosse Team (of which several are London-based). Please visit their website or contact info@scottishlacrosse.co.uk. They are keen to hear from you and are interested in hearing from potential sponsors.

"I am a member of the Scottish Lacrosse team and have been playing for Scotland since 1994, it is not a well known or well supported sport in terms of funding and publicity, but it is one of the fastest growing sports in Scotland at both club and university level for men. I have been living in the south for 5 years and I play for Hampstead Lacrosse Team along with another member of the current Scotland squad, James Mitchell.

This summer the Scottish Lacrosse Men's Squad is travelling to London, Ontario (Canada) for the World Lacrosse Championships which starts on July 13th and runs to July 22nd 2006. It is, I believe, the only World Cup Scotland are participating in this summer. We are taking a squad of 24 players and a support team of physiotherapists, trainers and management, we have been holding fund raising events to help cover player costs, as we do not receive any additional funding, whether from Sport Scotland or lottery due to the current participation levels. The cost for each player to attend the championships is currently set at GBP1400 and I was wondering whether any of my fellow SILs would be willing to donate to our cause, we have assembled the strongest squad to date since we won the "Emerging Nations Cup" at the world championships in 1994.

We have set up a donations area within the website at Scottish Lacrosse Men's Squad donations where people can make a Paypal or credit card donation to support our efforts in Canada. As you can imagine some of our squad members are finding it difficult to cope with the cost of the trip and do not want to miss out on a once in a lifetime experience. This years world championships are due to be the largest ever with over 22 nations competing in the main event, there were only 11 nations competing for the championship in 2002, and over 4,500 lacrosse players attending the festival of lacrosse that is running alongside. The Lacrosse World Cup website address is www.2006worldlacrosse.com

The "auld enemy" are being backed by Sport England and other support and due to this funding their cost per player is approximately GBP600. If each member of SIL were to generously donate a small amount of even GBP5, this would help cover half the expense of the trip. I know that this is a lot to ask as most people won't have even heard of lacrosse and have sports and charities they would prefer to support, but any donation no matter how small will help support the squad in our efforts to win this summers real World Cup. I appreciate it even if you just take the time to consider my request. Best regards, Giles Davidson."
