A message from The Gay Gordons, Scottish Gay and Lesbian Community (Country Dancing etc)

Dear Scots in London (SIL) (3,000+ dynamic, passionate Scots and growing fast),

The Gay Gordons (GG's) is a not-for-profit Scottish country dance group run for the gay and lesbian community and their friends in London. About 30 GG's get together weekly in Islington for a dance practice, and the GG's also hold regular geilidhs (see below for details of the Summer Geilidh). The GG's are friendly, and are more about having a good time than getting all the steps right. An evening consists of a selection of dances, all of which are explained first by our accredited and rather cool teacher John, and then danced. GG's normally dance with different people in each dance, and an evening with us is a great social time, and one of the best ways to exercise too. After the dancing, people usually adjourn for a social; if you're new, either ask someone, or hang around and follow the crowd.

Weekly venue: Unity Hall, 279 Upper Street, London N1 2TZ. Unity Hall is halfway along Upper Street whichever end you start from. go to either Angel or Highbury & Islington, and the hall is through the gates to the left-hand side of the Fire Station as you look at it.

Weekly details: Admission: GBP4. Time: Thursdays 7-9pm. Transport: Angel tube, or Highbury & Islington tube/rail.

Summer Geilidh: Our summer geilidh (pronounced 'gaily') will be held at the Rivoli Ballroom on Friday 23rd June, 2006 from 7.30pm - 12 midnight. The Rivoli Ballroom (350 Brockley Road, London, SE4 2BY) is an incredible listed 1950s ballroom in Crofton Park, South London; its breathtaking interior has been used as a location for films and television. On the night, there will be a band and a caller, who will explain all the dances. The Gay Gordons is London's not-for-profit LGBT Scottish country dance group; our summer geilidh is part of the EuroPride festival.

What is a Geilidh? A geilidh is like a ceilidh, but less stiff. The Gay Gordons welcome anyone to the dance whether you think you have two left feet or not. The basic steps can be picked up very quickly, and within minutes you will be entering into the fun; you should come prepared to dance with partners of either sex.

What should I wear? Dress up to have a good time. Any men who have kilts will feel foolish if they don't have them on. Anyone who doesn't have a kilt, some tartan somewhere in your outfit would be a bonus. Please wear soft-soled shoes, as the dancefloor is a tender creature.

How much?: Tickets are GBP8 (GBP6 unwaged/student) in advance and are available from our weekly rehearsals, Thursdays 7-9pm at Unity Church Hall, 279 Upper Street, N1, or Gay's the Word bookshop, 66 Marchmont Street, WC1. Tickets are also available on the night for GBP10 (GBP8).

Travel: The Rivoli is opposite Crofton Park rail station, and is served by the 171 and 172 bus.
